Updated: Aug 29, 2019

This next artist consistently believed in her childhood dreams, and eventually turned it into a thriving reality! Inspired by R&B artists Tori Kelly, H.E.R, and Alessia Cara, “A Closer Look” would like to present to you, the remarkable electric pop star, Alena Ciera.
Alena grew up in Oxon Hill, Maryland, home to the captivating National Harbour. At the age of six, she became inspired by Disney stars Lizzie Mcguire and Aly & AJ. Alena became fascinated by their roles, and shortly found interest in learning how to play the guitar. Regarding guitars, Alena recalls the Christmas she received her first one, “I was looking through the JC Penny catalog [and saw the instrument], I then told my mom exactly what I wanted; The day of Christmas she made me open up every other gift beforehand, but I still got it.” Alena laughed.
Apart from playing guitar, it’s safe to say Alena was a well-behaved cookie! In her younger days, she received the highest ranking and many certificates, holding the title of a Gold Award Girl Scout. “I didn’t want to do it in the beginning, but in the end, I’ve learned so much,” she stated. In school, she also played the snare drum for her school’s marching band, and soon became drumline captain.
After years of studying and perfecting her guitar skills, the hard work paid off! Alena presently fills in for the all-female Go-go band “Beladona," and is a member of the rising powerhouse band “IzaFlo." Not only that, but she has created her own band “1 identity”. Alena has performed on many stages, but her favorite venue by far has been “Dangerously Delicious Pies” in D.C. “The venue is new, and I love that you don’t have to bring any equipment,” Alena stated.
On the topic of D.C’s music scene, she thinks, “It’s really good, but It can be better.” However, Alena does appreciate the everyday jam sessions in and around the city. She’s also forever grateful for the many individuals in her circle who has inspired and helped her along her journey.
When it comes to her musical style, Alena differentiates from other artists because she’s able to incorporate various sounds into her music. “Sometimes people are stuck in their genre and don't fish out, but I feel like I do well with stepping outside of my box,” she stated. With her versatility, she wishes to reach a diverse group of individuals regardless of age. “You never know what the song may mean to others, and how they interpret it.”
Alena recently lost her job, but this change has made her extremely focused on her craft with the urge to transition to be a full-time musician. She’s not fond of working a 9-5 her whole life and has pledged to not do so. Aside from music, Alena enjoys driving sports cars, and motorcycles, she now has a Pontiac G8 GT with an LS3 Corvette engine and a 2017 Yamaha R6!
Two years from now, Alena has a goal to stay consistent with music, to perform and tour nationwide with her band 1 Identity, and branch out of the DMV with their music. Make sure to keep an eye out for 1 Identity anticipated EP!
In conclusion, when it comes to advice for aspiring artists, Alena would remind them that nobody will work as hard as you, for you, so continue to do things for yourself to progress. “It’s draining and tiring, but it always ends up working out.” She would also tell them to branch outside of their environment and immediate people because you never know who’s willing to help you. Lastly, “Be patient.”
