A Closer Look, R&B Artist, Noelle Sky

Sometimes you need to distance yourself to see things clearly! Who knew going to China would open this next artist's eyes?! Inspired by Jhené Aiko, SZA, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, and the beautiful late Aaliyah. DMV AUX presents to you, the angelic sweetheart, R&B artist, Noelle Sky.

Singer/songwriter, Noelle Sky, was born and raised in the Owings Mills neighborhood of Baltimore County, Maryland. Growing up, Noelle was raised in a Baptized household and spent most of her childhood in the church. Plenty of children at the age of two can barely put full sentences together, but at two, Noelle was singing, and a member of her church’s gospel choir.

Though as she matured, and her family relocated to the Timonium community of Baltimore County, Noelle suddenly shied away from singing and focused on dancing at her alma mater, Dulaney High School. Why? She admitted, “It was weird…, as a young child I had a lot of energy and charisma, but over time, I became shy to sing in front of others.”

Luckily, the break didn’t last for long, as a college sophomore studying abroad in China. Noelle began pursuing her passion again and shared a pleasant story that changed her journey. “I was singing at a small wedding, and everyone there treated me like a celebrity; that definitely inspired me to continue singing and encouraged me to bring it back home.”

Now, Noelle is back to square one and is currently attending Towson University, majoring in mass communications. As an artist and a student, it’s hard balancing the two and can become rather frustrating, but she hasn’t given up, and is continuing to find an equilibrium. One thing she will certainly say is “Music is an escape, but school is the concrete reality, there are still assignments due at 11:59pm.” We both laughed as I can lightly relate to her situation.

At the start of 2018, Noelle began taking her talent seriously and has been working on perfecting her craft ever since. Along the path of chasing her dreams, time management and instability have been an immense challenge, but with a strong support system, Noelle has become quite resilient.

When it comes to her musical style, Noelle writes from a spiritual therapeutic standpoint. “I want my music to be inspirational, relatable, and motivational,” she stated. In terms of differentiating from others, her voice is simply “unique with an inflected sound.”

In light of the DMV music scene, she believes we’re very colorful and house various sounds. “I was just talking to my friend about this, and one thing I appreciate is how funky, artistic, and jazzy we are,” she stated.

Concerning performing in the DMV, giving that rap and Hip-Hop are prominent in the Baltimore area; Noelle finds more thrill performing in DC rather than Baltimore due to their acceptance of new artists of all genres and high-grade vibes.

Aside from music, Noelle is passionate about spirituality and evolving as a person. In addition, she enjoys spoken word, meeting new people, and learning about new cultures.

Two years from now, Noelle is striving to release two albums and plans on relocating to New York. “I’ve always wanted to live in New York, so why not in my prime time!”

When it comes to advice for aspiring artists, your biggest enemy may be fear, but you have to keep pushing. “Let go of the fear, don’t procrastinate, and just do it,” she concluded.
