A Closer Look - R&B Artist, Sarina Désir

This breakout star has been making waves with her recent single “10/10”, bringing in 25k+ views on YouTube! Inspired by Ariana Grande, Kehlani, Jennifer Hudson, Céline Dion, and the late legend, Whitney Houston - - The DMV AUX presents to you the ambitious R&B artist, Sarina Désir.

Unlike her immediate family, who originates from Haiti, Sarina was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. She stated, “I was raised here in America, but I’m always surrounded by Haitian culture.” During her younger years, Sarina was an only child until the age of 14. Being raised in a strict protective household, she primarily focused on church and excelling in school; “Other than normal family drama, growing up was chill, and I was groomed to excel, go to college, and find a good career in STEM, but personally, never my plan,” she stated.

Sarina acquired a love for music at an early age and began writing songs at five years old! Following entering the workforce at 16, she made an obligation to take her dreams seriously. “I saved all my checks, brought a mic and a keyboard, and was ready to build/make my in-home studio.” She didn’t release any music throughout that time but admitted, it was great practice and allowed her to drive her creativity.

As a senior in high school, she finally came to terms music was the route for her, but her parents weren't so fond of the idea. “When it came to college, they were open to paying for anything, but certainly not music.” After applying to many schools, Sarina eventually ended up at Penn State University, majoring in landscape architecture. “As the second greatest program in the country, it was extremely intense; professors would tell me all the time if you're not staying up to 5 am, you're doing something wrong,” she shared.

Although she wasn’t completely content, for the first time, she came across many opportunities to express her amazing talent. She stated, “I wanted to get out of my comfort zone, so I participated in karaoke night, which eventually led me to other on-campus opportunities.” However, after countless sleepless nights and overworked days, Sarina packed her bags after a semester and a half and returned home to focus on music.

Her parents weren’t too happy with her choice, but after several negotiations, they ended up working it out. Safe to say, Sarina has since released four phenomenal songs, enrolled in online classes, and has gained the support of many.

In light of the DMV music scene, she heavily praises the producers and musicians in the area. “I’ll be in the studio, working with my producers and think to myself, I’m working with legends before they’re legends!” she stated. When it comes to her musical style, Sarina differentiates from others with her illimitable unique sound. “My sound is a mixture of everything, and vocally it’s something people haven't heard before."

Aside from music, Sarina is a total dog person and is all about her adorable dog, Angel. Furthermore, she enjoys playing video games, watching movies, and reading. She loves anything artistic, and once her singing progresses, she hopes to venture off into acting!

Two years from now, she aims to perform at countless venues, including The Fillmore Silver Spring and well-known festivals. In addition, she plans on releasing her debut EP at the start of 2020! Also, stay tuned for a sneaky single release this November!

When it comes to advice for aspiring artists, Sarina says just do it and never doubt yourself. “If you want to do it, do the full yard without hesitation!” Lastly, she stated, you will come across many obstacles, but never stop believing in yourself.

If you could be in any past/present movie, what movie would it be?

This is hard to answer, but I’ll do voice-overs for the film Coraline, the Fast and Furious Franchise, and Home Alone 2!

What song do you currently have on replay?

I have a few on replay, but mainly “Loose you to Love Me” by Selena Gomez.

What’s one thing you wish you didn’t have to pay for?

Gas, feminine hygiene products, and food; I spend way too much money on Thai food.

If you could hang out with any celebrity for a full day, who would it be and why?

Many people would expect me to say Arianna Grande, but I would hang out with Joe Budden. I love his podcast, and he’s always giving out great advice for independent artists.

He’s hilarious, and I feel like I can learn a lot from him.

Would you rather be an extreme couponer or an antique hoarder?

I would rather be an antique hoarder.

I’m not a hoarder, but I love vintage things, and in the future, I hope to extend my collection!

What’s one of your biggest pet peeves?

My biggest pet peeve deals with individuals who involuntarily lie.

If we’re just chilling and you randomly decide to tell a story full of lies, I would rather you just stay silent! (We both laughed)

Magnified Topic of the Week: Sarina Désir’s single “10/10”

Sarina’s single “10/10” is absolutely a 10 out of 10! This song was not only re-written once but 4x due to Sarina loving the beat, but having trouble feeling the lyrics. “It was a whole different song, the version you hear now, I hated it,” she stated.

Before, her music leaned towards “Chill R&B,” but her producer convinced her to step out of her boundaries, and she killed it.

When it comes to the music video, Sarina not only sheds light on her acting skills but her inner dancer as well! Stream “10/10” on all streaming platforms and click play below!
